Some of South Africa’s best developers don’t have degrees — what it takes to land a job

Some of South Africa’s best developers don’t have degrees — what it takes to land a job

MyBroadband asked South African software development and technology companies what qualifications people need to get a job as a developer. While many South African software houses prefer degrees, not all employers are looking for a tertiary qualification in the field. “Some of the best developers don’t have degrees,” DVT’s technology consulting principal Paul Gray told MyBroadband. “We believe jobs should be awarded to those most likely to create impactful and intelligent solutions, despite their circumstances which may or may not have allowed them to embark on tertiary education,” Synthesis head of talent Deborah Miller said. Sybrin’s head of operations, Henry Button, explained that they had seen many individuals without degrees who performed just as well or even… Source link

Beyond Magical Thinking: Time to Get Real on Climate Change

Beyond Magical Thinking: Time to Get Real on Climate Change

The UN’s first climate conference took place in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, and in the intervening decades we have had a series of global meetings and countless assessments and studies. Annual climate change conferences began in 1995 (in Berlin) and included much publicized gatherings in Kyoto (1997, with its completely ineffective agreement), Marrakech (2001), Bali (2007), Cancun (2010), Lima (2014), and Paris (2015). In Paris, about 50,000 people flew to the French capital to attend yet another conference at which they were to strike, we were assured, a “landmark” — and also “ambitious” and “unprecedented” — agreement. Yet the Paris Agreement did not codify any specific reduction targets by the world’s largest… Source link

Netflix Fires 150 Employees Following Ongoing Losses

Netflix Fires 150 Employees Following Ongoing Losses

In late April, we covered some of the internal chaos that was going on at Netflix following their loss of over 600,000 subscribers in North America last quarter. The streaming giant is expecting to lose another 2 million in the next quarter, and that loss is being passed down to the employees. While Netflix continues to sort out its future, they’ve also laid off 150 employees. While cutting 2% of its American workforce doesn’t seem super large, it’s a big deal when taken as part of the larger picture. Since the announcement of Netflix‘s recent misfortunes, there has been a lot of doom saying in the news and across the internet. Personalities like ColdFusion are already discussing “The Rise and Fall of Netflix.” Which, honestly, is far too presumptuous of a statement to make… Source link

Technology and State of the Art Deception | Opinion

Technology and State of the Art Deception | Opinion

Given the news over the last two weeks I believe nearly everybody can agree that life is precious, that we need to make sure that innocent people are not senselessly killed, and that the world can be a dangerous place for the vulnerable. What we probably can not agree on is whether or not we are talking about abortion or gun violence. I’m not hear to change anyone’s minds on either of these subjects. I wish to give you some food for thought when it comes to what you believe when dishonest brokers get hold of your attention. It is true that the world is harsh, not just on the unborn, or the unarmed but also for the uneducated. Anyone who follows… Source link

Monero-mining botnet targets Windows, Linux web servers • The Register

Monero-mining botnet targets Windows, Linux web servers • The Register

The latest variant of the Sysrv botnet malware is menacing Windows and Linux systems with an expanded list of vulnerabilities to exploit, according to Microsoft. The strain, which Microsoft’s Security Intelligence team calls Sysrv-K, scans the internet for web servers that have security holes, such as path traversal, remote file disclosure, and arbitrary file download bugs, that can be exploited to infect the machines. The vulnerabilities, all of which have patches available, include flaws in WordPress plugins such as the recently uncovered remote code execution hole in the Spring Cloud Gateway software tracked as CVE-2022-22947 that Uncle Sam’s CISA warned of this week. Once running on a compromised system,… Source link

Sublette Examiner | CyberWyoming Update – May 17

Geek squad invoice scams: A Sheridan citizen reported two emails impersonating Geek Squad support. The first was from a Gmail address with an attachment claiming to be an invoice. The subject line is “Thank you for your order!” Make sure you don’t open the attachment, call the number or reply. The second email was from an email address that looked like QuickBooks, which does not own Geek Squad, but the victim was supposed to reply to an Outlook email address, and the subject line was “Invoice GEEKS9=89379672 from Geek Squad.” USPS services text scam: A text was reported by a Laramie citizen saying “(USPS services) We have problem with your shipping address. Please verify https://subletteexaminer.com/article/cyberwyoming-update-may-17.” Note the incorrect spacing and grammar and remember that almost 50 percent of shipping… Source link

A better way to solve the housing crisis | Opinion

A better way to solve the housing crisis | Opinion

It should be quite obvious that there is a housing crisis throughout California, and here in Del Norte County. Everyone is talking about it. Our leaders from the Governor all the way down to the Crescent City Planning Commission have made affordable housing a top priority. Billions of tax dollars – your tax dollars – have been piling up ready to be ignited into a fiscal bonfire of unimagined government generosity. Soon, government agencies will compete against each other to be the “most progressive.” All the attention will be focussed on expanding the number of “homeless” people so that more government money will be made available. As in the… Source link
