My wife and I have been watching The Americans recently. It’s set in the early 1980s and tells the story of two Soviet KGB intelligence officers posing as an American married couple living in a suburb of Washington, DC. The Cold War politics feel pretty distant but the setting is very familiar. I have to remind myself when watching it that 1980 was forty years ago. It’s as far removed from today as it is from 1940. The world changed a lot between 1940 and 1980. Has it changed that much since then? There are of course fewer screens in The Americans than there are today. This week, social media was filled with a story about Kanye West’s new girlfriend, the actress Julia Fox. “Julia Fox Calls Kanye West Her ‘Fave Makeup Artist’ as He Helps Perfect Actress’ Edgy Look”, as the headline had it. As we can see from a photo of Julia, and the look in question, there are two very obvious conclusions to be drawn here. One — Julia is obviously very, very in love with Kanye. And two — heterosexual men should never be allowed to apply eyeliner to a woman. RIVERHEAD, NY — Rev your engines, it’s a go: The Riverhead Town board voted Wednesday to approve dates for drag racing this season at Enterprise Park at Calverton. Acccording to Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar, two separate proposals were before the town board. Peter Scalzo, who presented his “Race Track, Not Street,” series last year, is back this year for a Spring Classic on April 2, 3,9, 10 and 16. If there is a rain-out during that series, guests can redeem their ticket for any event later in the series, Scalzo said.
