A nuclear-powered high speed plane could be heading to the market, which would allow passengers to fly from London to New York in 80 minutes. The “Hyper Sting” is a new aircraft design by Oscar Viñals, a Spanish industrial and concept designer, which would fly at three times the speed of sound. The striking name is inspired by the jet’s pointed design. Viñals said: “The fuselage would have the shape of a ‘big sting’ with a very sharp ‘nose’, that would have the function to control the front airflow (pressure/speed), in order to redistribute it over the central part and over the wings.” The Hyper Sting has not yet been put to the test, but the designer claims it could reach a maximum speed of 2,664 mph. Britain will have a prototype nuclear fusion power station generating electricity for the grid in less than two decades, the government has pledged. The new Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project will be built by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) on the site of one of the UK’s last coal-burning power stations, West Burton, which EDF Energy is due to shut down next April. STEP’s power plant is expected to be smaller than other fusion energy programmes, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) or several projects in North America, which the scientists say could help reduce costs. Oscar Viñals, a Spanish designer, claims that his most recent creation could whisk travelers across the Atlantic at three times the speed of sound, allowing passengers to travel from London to New York City in less than 80 minutes. The “Hyper Sting” would travel from London to New York twice as fast as Concorde, which completed the trip in two hours and 53 minutes. It would also be nearly twice as big. The Hyper Sting, which is 328 feet long and can theoretically travel at a top speed of 2,664 mph, would be able to accommodate 130 to 170 passengers. Over on LinkedIn, Peter Clarkson of Woodside Energy in Australia triggered me with the idea of a way to categorize various decarbonization solutions, a standard quadrant chart with sexy/unsexy and practical/impractical as the options. The developer Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 is due to get a new hotfix, with server maintenance starting today at 10 AM PDT. That is almost 3 hours from the time of this writing. Unlike the previous hotfixes, this time, the developer doesn’t plan to shut down the servers, with zero downtime for players.
