Tomasz Witkowski Busts More Myths

Tomasz Witkowski Busts More Myths

Tomasz Witkowski is a Polish psychologist and skeptic (founder of the Polish Skeptics Club) who is well known for pointing out the lack of scientific evidence behind most of what psychologists do. I have reviewed three of his previous books Psychology Gone Wrong: The Dark Sides of Science and Therapy, Psychology Led Astray: Cargo Cult in Science and Therapy,  and  Shaping Psychology: Perspectives on Legacy, Controversy and the Future of the Field. He has done it again, and this time he extends his mythbustimg to topics outside psychology. His new book Fads, Fakes, and Frauds fulfills the promise of its subtitle, exploding myths in culture, science, and psychology. He shows that many of our popular beliefs are false and explains how they are biased by history and evolution…. Source link

Sensible Centrist Solutions Needed Now More Than Ever | Opinion

Sensible Centrist Solutions Needed Now More Than Ever | Opinion

Polls show Democrats are about to lose their majority in the House, and probably the Senate too. It would be odd if they didn’t. The party that controls the White House has lost an average of 26 seats in the House and four seats in the Senate during midterm elections since World War II. Lower overall turnout and higher motivation from opposition groups stymie most presidencies just when they hope to hit full stride. Though divided governments are often better than unchecked ones, now is not the time for Washington to do nothing. America needs multiple policy overhauls forged by sensible centrists. Take energy. Americans continue to consume record amounts… Source link

A Most Remarkable Website | 06880

Westporters of a certain age remember the Remarkable Book Shop. The pink building at the Main Street/Parker Harding Plaza corner was as funky inside as it was colorful outside. For over 30 years — from 1963 to 1995 — owner Esther Kramer and her band of bright, devoted and eclectic employees made the bookstore a home away from home for anyone looking for anything to read. If they didn’t have what you needed, Esther and her crew found it for you. And if you didn’t know what you wanted, they did. A classic photo of a classic store. Roaming the crooked aisles of “Remarkable” — and sitting in one of the over-stuffed chairs — was like wandering down a rabbit hole. Now — nearly 30 years after it closed — there’s another Remarkable Book Shop rabbit hole to… Source link
