Who needs Hinkley Point or Sizewell C? We already have human reactor Boris Johnson

Who needs Hinkley Point or Sizewell C? We already have human reactor Boris Johnson

It is arguably disappointing that Boris Johnson chose to use his last proper speech as a prime minister to readvertise his services as a newspaper columnist –but can you blame him, really? It is publicly assumed – and quite possibly even true – that the guy is in desperate need of a few quid, what with having dropped two hundred grand decorating what turned out to be a very short term rental flat. He had, in theory, gone to Suffolk to approve £700m of funding for a new nuclear power station. But mainly he’d gone to remind the nation’s right-wing comment desks that he’s definitely still got it. He’s always had it, really. The trouble is the same as it’s always been. The more you burnish your journalistic credentials as a weaver together of largely specious arguments,… Source link

Tag types – Coeur d'Alene Press

Tag types – Coeur d'Alene Press

I hate to say it. I mean I really hate to say it. They’re pretty good at rooting their own horns, or at least lecturing on how to toot it daily to keep it in prime condition. And you can bet they’re rooting it on time, to the designated millisecond. But what would we do without type As? Half of my clothes would still have that little plastic tag if it weren’t for the type As in my life. In fiction, you’re either a planner or a pantser (as in flying by the seat of your pants-er). Well in life (and maybe a little in writing), I’m a pantser. Which is to say I’m not a person who can reliably get myself (or my blouse) to a pair of scissors. The fact that the scissors are 14 feet away is not important. Before you ask, no, the tag… Source link

Taxpayer-funded research ought to be public

Taxpayer-funded research ought to be public

Last week, the Biden administration announced that Americans will get access to academic research that their federal tax dollars pay for. It’s about time. Scholarly journals have run a racket for decades. Researchers who want their work published in a prestigious journal hand it over to publishers who charge exorbitant fees to libraries and anyone else who wants access to cutting-edge work. Publishers got away with it because their print journals were the only game in town. Then the internet began to democratize information and eliminate paper publishing costs. It became a lot harder to justify keeping content, especially publicly funded content, behind steep paywalls. The federal government spends more than $100 billion on science and engineering research annually. The… Source link

The Beasleys’ new Young 27. Photos by George LaBonte For Brook Beasley and his wife, Olivia, what began as an impromptu vacation to theFlorida Keys during the 2020 COVID lockdowns unraveled a series of events that would see the pair and their four children uproot their lives in North Carolina and become permanent residents of South Florida.  Brook Beasley On their return trip from the Keys, a sudden school cancellation back home resulted in the Beasley family extending their stay by another month at an Airbnb rental home in Jupiter.
